On May 7th, 2021, the Panamanian government created the short-term visa for remote workers or digital nomads through law 198.

This short-term visa for remote workers or digital nomads visa could be apply by workers who:
- has a work contract with a transnational company, that is, a self-employed worker as a teleworker performs functions that take effect abroad,
- receive income from a foreign source and with an annual amount of thirty-six thousand (36,000) dollars or its equal in foreign currency.
With this visa, it is not required to process a work permit as it assumes that the worker will do so in the teleworking modality for a company outside of Panama
All nationalities can apply for this permit, but in the case of certain countries that need a visa to enter Panama, they must make their corresponding entry visa application at the nearby embassy or consulate and so apply for a Short Stay Visa as a Remote worker in Panama.
It is prohibited to carry out activities that take effect within Panama or for companies in Panama.
The application is individual, and dependents are not allowed.
The period of validity of this visa is for 9 months, extendable for the same term only once.
In the case of foreigners whose purpose is the provision of non-profit social services, covered by agreements with the government, patronage or non-governmental organizations recognized by the Ministry of Economy and Finance, those who take part in student exchanges and those who provide these services under the remote worker modality, this visa may be extended once for the same term, and the payment of expenses for migratory services will be exempted.
